The UK is lagging behind the United States and most of Europe when it comes to property affordability on an average household salary, a new study has found.

Research commissioned by Homes.com into the top 36 OECD countries found house hunters in Turkey got the most for their money, affording to buy a 742ft² property on the country's median wage of $17,067 USD per year.

The US also fared well, with the average American earning $44,049 able to purchase a 669.4 ft²home. Mexico, Russia and Slovakia also joined the two countries in the top five.

British homeowners aren't so lucky. Researchers found the typical Brit could only stretch to 215ft² on a $28,408 salary. That's 68 per cent smaller than the standard American floor space. The UK did, however, manage to stay out of the bottom five property markets, where it's hardest to buy and get onto the property ladder as an average earner.

South Korea is the hardest place to be a first-time buyer on a median wage.

South Korea was the least affordable spot. The median household income is $21,723, affording just 84.4 ft² of home. Switzerland, Israel, Japan and Luxembourg are also not first-time buyer friendly.

In fact, the disparity between Turkey and South Korea is a staggering 658 ft² of floor space, and a difference in price of $898 per square ft.
