One of the coolest features of Microsoft OneNote is that you can add pictures to your notes. If you are using OneNote for the first time, resizing these images can be a challenge. In this article, we'll provide you some tips on how to crop images in Microsoft OneNote.

Inserting Pictures in Microsoft OneNote

Before cropping your image on OneNote, you will need first to add the image to your OneNote document. Inserting pictures into OneNote may vary based on the picture source. If you are unsure about how to add pictures to your OneNote, here are two methods you can use.

Method 1: Inserting Pictures From a Camera

You can upload pictures straight to OneNote from your webcam, tablet, mobile camera, or traditional camera connected by cable.

  1. Click on Insert > Picture > Camera. This will open your device's camera.
  2. You can then edit your image if your device allows edits.
  3. After that, insert your image.

Method 2: Inserting Online Pictures

The alternative method you can use to insert pictures into your OneNote is to add them directly from your desired online source. You can use a source of your liking, for example, Getty Images.

  1. While still on your OneNote document, click on Insert.
  2. Select Pictures.
  3. Choose the From Online option. This will open an Online Pictures pane.
  4. Type in a keyword on the search box describing the picture you need, and press Enter or Search.
  5. Once you find an appropriate image, click on it to insert it into the page.

Method 3: Inserting Screenshots Into Your Microsoft OneNote

Microsoft OneNote also allows you to add screenshots to your notes if you are interested in doing so.

  1. Take the screenshot of what you want to add to your OneNote and save it.
  2. While still editing your OneNote, place the cursor on the location you wish your screenshot to appear.
  3. Click on Insert.
  4. Select Screen clipping.
  5. Drag to define the area you intend to capture.
  6. Save your file.
  7. You can then edit and resize your image to best suit your content and formatting.

Method 4: Inserting Pictures From Your Files in OneNote

When you already have the picture saved onto your computer, inserting it into Microsoft OneNote is much easier. Here's what you need to do.

  1. Place your cursor at the position where you want your image to appear.
  2. Click on the Insert tab > Pictures > From File option.
  3. An Insert Picture dialog box will appear. Here, browse and choose the image you want to add to your document.
  4. Click Open.
  5. You can then click on the photo and use the handles that will appear to resize and scale your photo.

Cropping a Picture in Microsoft OneNote

Method 1: Cropping a Picture in OneNote for Windows

If you have inserted a picture into your notes but are not pleased with its contents, you can crop it without leaving OneNote. To do this, simply take a screen clipping of the image by following this step-by-step guide.

  1. Ensure you have first inserted the image you intend to crop.
  2. Click on a blank space within the page to ensure that you have not selected the photo in question.
  3. Activate screen clipping by pressing the Windows logo key + Shift + S.
  4. You will notice that your screen dims after you press these keys.
  5. Drag your selection over the image, ensuring only to cover the parts you intend to keep. This saves the clip to your keyboard, where you can retrieve it afterward.
  6. Click on the location where you want to insert your image. This could be anywhere within the notes.
  7. Press Ctrl+V. It will then paste your photo.
  8. Check it out to see if it pleases you before you delete the original picture. If it does not, you could always redo the process and capture the image correctly.

Method 2: Cropping a Picture in OneNote for the Web

One of the most valuable features of OneNote is that you can use it to crop your pictures for the web. The procedure is pretty simple:

  1. Click on the picture you intend to crop for your web document. This will prompt the Picture Tools | Format menu.
  2. Select the Format option and click on Crop. This will activate the cropping handles around your image.
  3. Click on the cropping handles and drag them to your satisfaction.
  4. Click on Crop once you have achieved your desired dimensions.

Alternatively, you can resize your images using the Resize option in the Format panel.

Editing Your Pictures on OneNote

Apart from cropping your images using Microsoft OneNote, you can also do a few minor edits on your OneNote workspace. For instance, if you want to rotate your picture, you do not have to use alternative photo editors. You can do it right there on your OneNote!

Follow these simple steps to rotate your photos on OneNote.

  1. Select the image you intend to rotate by clicking on it.
  2. A ribbon will appear, giving you options to choose from.
  3. Click on the Picture tab that will appear on your ribbon.
  4. Once that is done, you can decide how much and in which direction to rotate the image. In other words, 90 degrees clockwise.
  5. You can then advance with your work and save the document as you desire.

Please note that image editing on Microsoft OneNote is not as advanced as you may require. For any editing needs beyond cropping and rotating, it may be best to use a different editing app before inserting your image into your notes.
